Reflections and determination to continue
LFS is really hard and really isn’t for newbs. I freely admit that I’m the newbiest of newbs. But I met the stated absolute minimum LFS requirement (p. x in the PDF manual) of being able to use basic command line stuff. The online FAQ also says: Anybody who has a couple of months experience…

$LFS/sources rabbit hole
So what should the permissions be for /sources at the end of Chapter 4? The manual would seem to be leaving /sources as root:root. Instances of Google AI Mode were divided, but some of them argued forcefully that to compile by user lfs, then /sources had to be lfs:lfs and to change it to that…

sudo su –
I was aware that there were such things as login and non-login sessions, I was aware that Ubuntu prevents having a password for root, etc. I wasn’t aware that using sudo was functionally different than login. And in fact, probably (possibly?) so far it hasn’t been a problem as far as gumming up $LFS, and…

I wonder if I should start over from section 2.5
Well, Google AI Mode talked me out of it. Says that having used “sudo” a lot should not have affected anything other than permissions up to this point. Once again, we’ll see. In other news, I read a lot about stopping the jiggling icon and wound up just turning animation off in Ubuntu GUI. And…

Error recap
Those last two sessions were incredibly frustrating. I felt that I may not be up to this. Analyzing what happened, however, there were five errors: One was not knowing how to properly log in as root. Now I know. A second was a typo I made. A third was caused by Google AI Mode telling…

Correcting errors
I wanted to check something, in fact I was planning to go over the startup files again, and found I couldn’t log in/on as lfs. Panicked. A new Google AI Mode session. Log on as root with sudo su – and look through the files for errors. I found a typo in .bashrc, a missing…

Create startup files for lfs
Continuing 4.4 Here I flipped out when the prompt changed. And I had to convince Google AI Mode that this should be done as in the manual while logged in as lfs. So I logged in with su – lfs The previous time, in 4.3, when I logged in/on as lfs, there was a normal…

Undocumented /etc/bash.bashrc
In 4.4: rename (move out of the way) /etc/bash.bashrc to prevent it affecting the lfs user environment. (Note: manual says can restore it after the project.) Ubuntu has an /etc/bash.bashrc, I don’t know which other distros have it or not. The LFS manual just refers to it as “undocumented.” So far I am sensing some…

Excuses, excuses
So in August there was some water intrusion in the basement and I wasn’t able to work on LFS for some weeks / months. Still going to do LFS. I would hate if it took me YEARS however.

Typos
Man, the typos I’m making in these posts… I hope no one is copying exactly what I do without verifying it… Me and Google AI Mode have something in common after all… I’m trying to correct stuff as I see it…
